The
hill of Belleville was very fashionable at the end of the 18th century
and in the first half of the 19th century by the whole of Paris with
its closing party of the Mardi Gras called the “descente de
la courtille”.
It was said at this time “to see Paris without the Courtille, is like seeing
Rome without the Pope”. And for good reason, imagine the whole of daily
Paris of the period, like our VIPs of today, disguised in fancy dress, coming
to drink wine with the workers of Belleville at parties where the wine flowed
like water.
After hours of drinking and orgies of all sorts, everybody ran down the hill
shouting and throwing objects on their way.
It should be noted that Belleville already had a
famous tenant of a cabaret Ramponeaux who had his “Tambour
royal” at 36 rue du Faubourg du Temple.
