On
this hill, which was once a village, a small plot of land of 500m² was
planted in 1992. These 160 stems were cultivated in memory of the
past wine-making in the area. The history of Belleville is strictly
linked to wine. It was in fact Belleville where “guinguet” was
produced, a young wine lightly sparkling which later gave its name
to “guinguettes” (parties). These were cabarets on
the outskirts of towns where the wine was not taxed. In the 18th
century, the hill of Belleville held numerous “guinguettes” where
one came at the end of the day to quench ones thirst with a locally
produced wine.
